Can you scare the pants off of readers in 140 characters or less? Tweet The Meat publishes horror stories through its Twitter feed, along with the occasional weird or speculative pieces.

And it’s a paying market — $1.00 per tweet.

The Tweet Set-Up

Tweet The Meat shares a story-tweet, followed by a secondary tweet including bylines. One tweet is published each day.

At this point, Tweet The Meat is supported entirely by donations, supplemented by the editors. A few of the Twitter-based publications we’ve seen in the past few months have been part of another publication, minimizing costs and monetization worries. But as more markets spring up, they face the problem of most new publications — how do they make money?

As far as Twitter goes, there seem to be a few options: tweeting the occasional ad, supporting the Twitter-stream through a website hosting advertising and so on. But it’s bound to be harder to come up with money than for other forms of publications. With a little effort, subscriptions might be an option — an editor could make tweets private, only allowing followers who have paid their subscription fees. I’m not particularly confident that such an approach would take off, however.
